Report: Data centers' indirect water use far exceeds direct use, electricity becomes largest source of water footprint

The sustainable development nonprofit Ceres released a report pointing out that the most significant water footprint of U.S. data centers comes not from direct uses like cooling, but from indirect water use associated with the electricity that powers them. In seven states that host nearly half of the nation's data centers, data centers indirectly use about 3.4 trillion gallons of fresh water annually due to electricity consumption, with 66% of power-generation water use occurring in regions with medium-high or extremely high water stress. The report projects that by 2030, indirect water use could rise to between 4.1 and 7.6 trillion gallons, data center capacity is expected to double, and electricity consumption could account for 9% to 17% of total U.S. demand.
